It is not known whether South African collections are of introduced origin or not. Gillett's distribution map for Indigofera hirsuta (Gillett 1960) indicates that it occurs along the east African coast from Kenya to Mozambique and Madagascar, and then disjunctly across central tropical and west Africa south of the Sahara, but not in South Africa.
