Justification
Polygala nematocaulis is a range-restricted and localized habitat specialist, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 2869 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 52 km². It is easily overlooked, and is threatened in places by competition from alien invasive plants, but most of its habitat is well-protected. It is therefore listed as Least Concern.

Description
It occurs in marshy places on lower sandstone slopes.
Threats
Polygala nematocaulis is threatened by competition from alien invasive plants at Steenbras Siding, Theewaterskloof and Viljoen's Pass. It has lost habitat to timber plantations at Orange Kloof on the Cape Peninsula in the past, but plantations are no longer expanding. Most of its remaining habitat is however well-protected, particularly within the Kogelberg Wilderness Area.

It is a rarely recorded habitat specialist, but may also be overlooked as plants are small.
