Family | ARACEAE |
Common Names | Highveld Golden Arum (e) |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |

Justification | This species has a limited distribution range with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 182 km ², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 28 km². It is known from less than five locations, and the population is declining due to the removal of plants for horticultural purposes, the loss of habitat due to mining, and expanding human settlements. It therefore qualifies as Endangered under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo |
Range | This species is endemic to Sekhukhuneland in Limpopo, South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Sekhukhune Mountain Bushveld |
Description | Plants grow on norite outcrops and cliffs in grassland. |
Threats |
This species, with its deep yellow flowers and spotted leaves, is a popular horticultural subject. Collecting has resulted in its local extinction at the type locality, and it is generally much rarer in the southern Leolo Mountains, where it was initially discovered. Plants are removed from accessible sites such as near villages, cultivated fields, and lower hills by the local Pedi population to sell to people for their gardens (Craib 2003). The habitat, mineral-rich norite boulders, is also threatened by mining and expanding human settlements. |
Population |
No population data is available for this species, but it is suspected to be declining due to illegal harvesting, mining, and urban developments.
|
Population trend | Decreasing |
Conservation |
It is not conserved in any formally protected area. |
