Scientific Name | Aspalathus calcarea R.Dahlgren |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | FABACEAE |
Synonyms | Aspalathus remota L.Bolus |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2018/10/04 |
Assessor(s) | A.L. Schutte-Vlok & D. Raimondo |
Justification | Aspalathus calcarea is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 2413 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of less than 1000 km². An estimated six to 10 remaining locations continue to decline due to competition from alien invasive plants. It is therefore listed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa, and is restricted to a small area of the Western Cape's southern coastal plain, where it occurs from Elim to Bredasdorp and Stilbaai. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Canca Limestone Fynbos, De Hoop Limestone Fynbos, Agulhas Limestone Fynbos, Hartenbos Dune Thicket |
Description | It occurs in lowland limestone fynbos. |
Threats |
This species has lost a small proportion (5%) of its habitat to coastal development. Competition from alien invasive plants is an ongoing threat across its range. |
Population |
It has been recorded at only three locations in the past 10 years. Locations known through historical records are mostly outside protected areas where there are no ongoing alien invasive plant clearing efforts - these need to be surveyed to determine whether the species is still present. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat degradation.
