Justification
This species has a restricted range in South Africa (national EOO 7489 km²), but is very widespread outside South Africa. It is threatened in parts of its range by habitat loss and degradation, but is not yet in danger of extinction.

Description
It occurs in coastal forest and dune thicket.
Threats
It is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to expansion of rural settlements and agriculture outside protected areas. Inside protected areas it is potentially threatened by habitat degradation due to biological resource extraction for fuel and construction materials. According to Boon (2010) the bark is used in the preparation of snuff, but no widespread decline due to bark harvesting has been reported.

Subpopulations on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast and Pondoland region of the Eastern Cape is considered a separate species (Boon 2010).
