National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2011/10/12 |
Assessor(s) | D. Raimondo & N.A. Helme |
Justification | A highly localized species (EOO 49 km²). Three to four known locations are potentially threatened by expanding wheat and rooibos tea cultivation and livestock grazing. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Koebee escarpment and Matsikamma Mountains. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Klawer Sandy Shrubland, Vanrhynsdorp Shale Renosterveld |
Description | Karroid scrub, fynbos-succulent karoo ecotones on lower slopes, 260-450 m. |
Threats |
Potentially threatened by habitat loss to crop cultivation and grazing. The flats below the Matsikamma Mountains are periodically cultivated, and at least one historical locality has been extensively ploughed for rooibos and wheat cultivation (N.A. Helme pers. comm.). Sheep and cattle graze the lower slopes, and this species is likely to be grazed as legumes are generally very palatable. |
