This species occurs from the Soutpansberg in Limpopo Province to the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, extending along the southern and eastern Cape coast to the Cape Peninsula and the Cederberg. It also occurs in eSwatini (Swaziland), Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania and Madagascar.

It occurs on rocky hillsides in grasslands and scrub and tends to be restricted to sandstone or quartzite, never near water.
