Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | HYACINTHACEAE |

Justification | Ornithogalum verae is a range-restricted species endemic to the Roggeveld Escarpment. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of less than 500 km² and is known from two collections. It is possibly overlooked as plants are smaller than 5 cm and is not threatened. It is therefore listed under the IUCN 3.1 Criteria, globally, as Least Concern but is nationally categorised as Rare. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to South Africa where it is found in the Roggeveld Escarpment. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Roggeveld Karoo, Roggeveld Shale Renosterveld |
Description | It grows on dolerite flats. |
Threats |
There are no severe threats to this species. Parts of the Roggeveld Escarpment is degraded due to overgrazing, but Ornithogalum species are typically poisonous to livestock, and tend not to decline under grazing pressure. |
Population |
Ornithogalum verae was described in 1996 (Müller-Doblies and Müller-Doblies 1996), based on two collections from the Roggeveld Escarpment. To date, no further collections have been matched to the description (duplicates of the type material was not distributed to South African herbaria). It is possibly overlooked, but since there are no severe threats to this species it is not suspected to be in danger of extinction.
