Scientific Name | Lachenalia alba W.F.Barker ex G.D.Duncan |
Higher Classification | Monocotyledons |
Family | HYACINTHACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2019/10/22 |
Assessor(s) | G.D. Duncan & D. Raimondo |
Justification | It has lost ± 25% of its habitat to ploughing for wheat cultivation and the habitat that remains is less than 20 km². Potentially threatened by trampling by livestock and porcupine digging. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Northern Cape |
Range | This species occurs in the Bokkeveld Escarpment. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Nieuwoudtville Shale Renosterveld, Nieuwoudtville-Roggeveld Dolerite Renosterveld, Bokkeveld Sandstone Fynbos |
Description | This species occurs in heavy clay soils in renosterveld, on flats in large colonies amongst low scrub and grasses. The scapes remain attached to the bulbs until the fruits split open and seeds are dispersed locally. Flowers are pollinated by honey bees. |
Threats |
This species is threatened by sheep trampling and porcupine diggings - there has been an observed decline due to porcupines at the Nieuwoudtville Wildflower Reserve (Raimondo D. and Marinus E. 2003). Furthermore, it was threatened by ploughing in the past - 84% of the habitat was lost to ploughing along the Oorlogskloof road. The dolerite clays at the Nieuwoudtville Wildflower Reserve and the Toren farm area around Calvinia are probably less threatened by cultivation. |
