Justification
The population of this local endemic is known from eight to 10 locations with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1582 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 32 km², and continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to Western Cape province of South Africa, where it occurs between Wellington and Durbanville.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Swartland Granite Renosterveld
Description
It occurs on granite slopes, in gravelly sand or acid humus. At a fruiting stage, the ripening capsules re-orientate themselves to a spreading or suberect position, then mature capsules split open and seeds are dispersed locally by shaking action of wind. Flowers are pollinated by birds.
Threats
More than 60% of the species' habitat is irreversibly modified, mainly as a result of agricultural expansion and infrastructure development. It continues to decline due to competition from alien invasive plants, and habitat degradation due to overgrazing by livestock.
Population

This species occurs in small clumps within large colonies, and it is restricted to a few remaining locations. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
