Justification | The population of this local endemic is known from eight to 10 locations with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1582 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 32 km², and continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to Western Cape province of South Africa, where it occurs between Wellington and Durbanville. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Swartland Granite Renosterveld |
Description | It occurs on granite slopes, in gravelly sand or acid humus. At a fruiting stage, the ripening capsules re-orientate themselves to a spreading or suberect position, then mature capsules split open and seeds are dispersed locally by shaking action of wind. Flowers are pollinated by birds. |
Threats |
More than 60% of the species' habitat is irreversibly modified, mainly as a result of agricultural expansion and infrastructure development. It continues to decline due to competition from alien invasive plants, and habitat degradation due to overgrazing by livestock. |
Population |
This species occurs in small clumps within large colonies, and it is restricted to a few remaining locations. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
