National Status |
Status and Criteria | Endangered B1ab(iii,v) |
Assessment Date | 2018/07/16 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden & M. Lötter |
Justification | Barleria oxyphylla is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 3342 km². It is known from four locations in South Africa, and is threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation across its range in South Africa. It is also threatened outside South Africa, and therefore the national status is not adjusted following IUCN regional assessment guidelines. |
Distribution |
Endemism | Not endemic to South Africa |
Provincial distribution | Mpumalanga |
Range | This species is endemic to the Mpumalanga Lowveld and adjacent areas in Mozambique and Swaziland. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Tshokwane-Hlane Basalt Lowveld, Granite Lowveld, Zululand Lowveld |
Description | It occurs in Lowveld savanna. |
Threats |
In South Africa this species has lost habitat to urban and agricultural expansion in the Komatipoort area between the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park and the northern border of Swaziland. It is still present in at least one location near Mananga, where it is threatened by ongoing habitat loss and degradation due to overgrazing, alien plant invasions and spreading informal settlements. The rest of the population of this species in South Africa is protected within the Kruger National Park and Manyeleti private game reserve, where it is threatened by habitat degradation due to overgrazing by game. It is also threatened by habitat loss and degradation in Swaziland and Mozambique. |
Population |
This species is known from only a few records, and is suspected to be rare. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
