Justification | This species has a limited distribution range, an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1995 km ², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 60 km². It is known from between 5 and 10 locations, and the population is declining due to habitat loss, encroachment by invasive alien plants, and illegal collection for the horticultural trade. It therefore qualifies as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | This species is endemic to the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, where it occurs from Uitenhage to Port Elizabeth and Humansdorp. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Algoa Sandstone Fynbos, Sundays Valley Thicket, Sundays Arid Thicket, Bethelsdorp Bontveld |
Description | Plants grow on gentle hillsides. |
Threats |
Historically, it was threatened by industrial development, which is still ongoing at Coega. At least 10% of this species' habitat has been transformed due to these developments (calculated using GIS). It is also harvested for horticultural purposes and is threatened by invasive alien plants in a number of subpopulations. |
Population |
Reported to be common but localised where it occurs. The population is suspected to be declining due to illegal harvesting and habitat loss to infrastructural developments. Competition with invasive alien species may result in a further decline in the population.
