Description
Schistose outcrops on low hills surrounded by sandy flats.
Threats
Threatened by severe, ongoing habitat loss and degradation as a result of mining and overgrazing. One subpopulation, known through historical records, was collected at a site that is now an open-cast mine, and may already be locally extinct. The impact of mines extend well beyond mining sites as a result of disturbed sand blowing off mining sites and burying low hills and rocky outcrops such as this species' habitat in sand. This species' entire known range is also severely overstocked with livestock, and overgrazing is causing ongoing degradation, loss of shrub cover, species diversity, and disturbance and erosion as a result of trampling.
Population

This species is a localized habitat specialist, known from three subpopulations on the southern banks of the Orange River, one of which may already be locally extinct due to mining. Williamson (2006) states that this species also occurs on the northern banks of the Orange River in Namibia, but cites no collections, and there are no known herbarium specimens originating from Namibia in South African herbaria, and the size and extent of the Namibian population cannot be estimated.
