Justification | A restricted endemic to the Waterberg mountain complex in the Limpopo province with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 7460 km² with more than 12 stable subpopulations. Although this species partially qualifies as Vulnerable under the B1 criterion, there is not enough evidence to support a decline in populations or severe fragmentation. Therefore it is assessed as Least Concern. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo |
Range | This species is endemic to the Waterberg mountain range in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Grassland, Savanna |
Description | Due to this species being restricted to the Waterberg area, it mainly occurs in rocky grassland in open woodland areas. |
Threats |
The Waterberg area is fairly untransformed with several game farms in operation. There are agricultural activities around towns and villages but there has not been a significant increase in agricultural expansion. Reports from locals (2022) suggest that some game farms are reverting back to commercial livestock farming due to the impact of Covid 19 on the tourism industry. In addition there are new pecan nut orchards being established in the area. This species normally grows in rocky habitats which is not suitable for growing pecan nuts. |
Population |
Reports from experts in the field suggest that this species occurs in small numbers but in rocky habitats which are fairly safe from habitat transformation and intense alien plant invasion.
