Threats
KwaZulu-Natal coastal areas between Durban and Port Shepstone is one of the most popular holiday destinations in South Africa and these areas have been extensively impacted by coastal development. While coastal development does not often extend right onto coastal dunes and beaches, such sites are often degraded through high human impact and is also severely affected by alien invasive encroachment (Mucina and Rutherford 2006). It is very difficult to estimate the exact extent of habitat loss as subtropical dune thicket has not been adequately mapped, and transformation and degradation is underestimated by the national land cover map. C.R. Scott-Shaw (pers. comm.) estimated for Aloe thraskii that c 20-30% of the habitat is transformed and degraded.
