Assessor(s)

Justification
Chlorophytum aridum is a widespread species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 71 673 km². It is declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation, but is not yet in danger of extinction.
Distribution
Endemism
Not endemic to South Africa
Provincial distribution
Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga
Range
This species is widespread across north-eastern South Africa, where it occurs from Pretoria to Louis Trichardt, and southwards to northern Maputaland in KwaZulu-Natal. It also occurs in eSwatini (Swaziland).
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Springbokvlakte Thornveld, Loskop Mountain Bushveld, Makatini Clay Thicket, Legogote Sour Bushveld, Western Maputaland Clay Bushveld, Swaziland Sour Bushveld, Malelane Mountain Bushveld, Pretoriuskop Sour Bushveld, Gold Reef Mountain Bushveld, Polokwane Plateau Bushveld, Soutpansberg Mountain Bushveld, Makhado Sweet Bushveld, Waterberg Mountain Bushveld, Loskop Thornveld, Central Sandy Bushveld
Description
It occurs in rocky places in dry bushveld.
Threats
At least 37% of this species' habitat is already irreversibly modified due to urban expansion in Gauteng, crop fields in western Mpumalanga and southern Limpopo, and timber plantations on the Limpopo and Mpumalanga escarpment. Loss continues, mainly due to urban expansion around Gauteng, and expansion of mining on the Mpumalanga Highveld.
Population

This is a widespread, but very rarely recorded species. It is possibly overlooked - Chlorophytum is taxonomically problematic and species are difficult to separate. A continuing decline is inferred from ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
