Justification
Euphorbia excelsa is a range-restricted species with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1 194 km². It is locally common and not in danger of extinction, and is therefore listed as Least Concern.

This species is endemic to Sekhukhuneland in South Africa, where it is found in the Olifants River Valley around Penge.

Description
It occurs on rock outcrops in dry valleys, sometimes in open rocky woodland on slopes.
Threats
A very small proportion of this species' habitat has been lost and degraded due to mining. Mining expansion remains a potential threat. There has been significant expansion of rural settlements in the lowlands of Sekhukhuneland over the past 30 years, and some development may have impacted this species.
