Justification
Asparagus stipulaceus is a range-restricted species, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 265 km². It is known from 12 locations and is declining due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation. It almost qualifies as Vulnerable under criterion B and is therefore listed as Near Threatened.

The distribution range of this species is uncertain, due to unresolved taxonomic problems. It is endemic to South Africa, and is possibly restricted to the southern Cape Peninsula, but may occur as far as the Agulhas Plain.

Description
It occurs on rocky lower slopes and ridges near the coast.
Threats
Asparagus stipulaceus is threatened by ongoing habitat loss to urban expansion around Simon's Town, as well as spreading alien invasive plants around Red Hill (S.M. Burrows pers. obs.).
Population

It is a range-restricted and rarely recorded species, occurring in small subpopulations consisting of only a few plants. The population continues to decline outside protected areas due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation.
