Justification
Sorocephalus teretifolius is a species with a restricted range, it has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 152 km², and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 52 km². The population continues to decline at four known locations due to alien pine and hakea invasion. It therefore qualifies for listing as Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to the Western Cape Province, South Africa, where it occurs from the Du Toit's Kloof Mountains to Blokkop.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Hawequas Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It grows on rocky, dry, high-altitude slopes, 1500-1850 m. Mature individuals are killed by fires, and only seeds survive. Seeds are released after ripening, and dispersed by ants to their underground nests, where they are protected from predation and fire. It is pollinated by insects.
Threats
Its habitat is currently experiencing ongoing decline as a result of the spread of invasive hakea and pine species.
Population

This is a rare taxon, that mostly occurs as small isolated subpopulations of less than 20 plants across a 21 km range. Only one large subpopulation is known from Blokkop where there are several hundred individuals. The population is declining due to competition with invasive alien plant species.

Decreasing
Conservation
All subpopulations are in the Theewaters and Hawekwas nature reserves.
