Description
It occurs in sandstone and quartzite sands in montane fynbos, 900-1900 m. Mature individuals are killed by fires, and only seeds survive. Seeds are released after ripening, and dispersed by ants to their underground nests, where they are protected from predation and fire. It is dioecious, with insect-pollinated male and female flowers occurring on separate plants.
Threats
At present, there are no severe threats to this species. As a reseeder, it is potentially threatened by too frequent fire, but there is no current evidence of increasing fire frequencies within its range.
Population

This species is locally common across its range. There are no severe threats to the population, and therefore it is not suspected to be declining.
