Justification
Serruria rebeloi is restricted to two mountain ranges in the Agulhas Plain region of South Africa where it has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 50 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 40 km². Three threat defined locations continue to decline as a result of alien plant invasions and vineyard expansion. Only a small portion of the species' known range is protected. It therefore qualifies for listing as Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is known from Akkedisberg Mountains to the Bredasdorp Mountains, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Overberg Sandstone Fynbos
Description
It occurs in seeps on gentle sandstone slopes, at 480-600 m.a.s.l.
Threats
The main threat to this species is the ongoing spread of alien invasive hakeas and pines. Habitat transformation for cultivation of vineyards is also a threat and has already resulted in the loss of the subpopulation occurring on the Bredasdrop Mountains.
Population

Serruria rebeloi occurs over an 8 km long range on the Akkedisberg Range where around 500 individuals were recorded in 1998. The far western portion of this subpopulation occurs in Salmonsdam Nature Reserve, the majority of the subpopulation is however not protected. A second subpopulation that occurs on the Bredasdorp mountains above Napier was reduced by 20% when it was illegally bulldozed to plant vineyards. The population is suspected to be declining as a result of ongoing loss of habitat to invasive alien plant species.

Population trend
Decreasing
Conservation
A single small subpopulation has been found in the Salmonsdam Nature Reserve.
Notes
An extremely cryptic, understorey protea that is easily overlooked.
