Range
This species is widespread across northern South Africa, the western Free State and northern KwaZulu-Natal, but absent from the high-rainfall and high-altitude regions of southern Mpumalanga, the eastern Free State and KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg. It is widespread across tropical and East Africa from Sudan to Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

It occurs in sandy and stony soils in deciduous woodlands, wooded grassland and floodplain grasslands, in disturbed places or drainage lines.
