Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | AIZOACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Least Concern |
Assessment Date | 2023/04/17 |
Assessor(s) | V. Zikishe & A.P. Dold |
Justification | This species is widespread and abundant in the Eastern Cape Province where it has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 34 194 km². Over-stocking in communal farmlands and human settlement expansion does not pose a serious threat. This species is listed as Least Concern due to its stable and abundant population status, as well as the lack of threats in the majority of its locations. Ongoing monitoring is highly recommended to ensure the population trend remains stable. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | This species occurs in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa between Kiwane and Cintsa, as well as inland as far as King Williams town and Pirie. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Albany Thicket |
Description | It grows mostly on calcareous sandstone outcrops, in coastal grassland, and in open areas of Albany thicket. |
Threats |
The inland and rural subpopulations may be threatened by rural settlement expansion, and because the growth habit of these plants is shallow-rooted, animal trampling may also pose a minor to moderate threat. The coastal subpopulation, particularly the Shelley Beach locality, is surrounded by numerous tourism and recreation activities, such as golf courses, which, while not directly affecting the plants, may have an impact on its habitat conditions, thus leading to habitat degradation. None of these threats are suspected to be causing significant population decline. |
Population |
This species' historical and recent records indicate that it is common throughout its range, there is only subpopulation level data for one subpopulation at Buffalo City where over 250 individuals were observed in 2022. While there is no trend data available, the population is suspected to be stable.
