Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | LAMIACEAE |
Synonyms | Hemizygia rugosifolia M.Ashby |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable D2 |
Assessment Date | 2019/03/29 |
Assessor(s) | L. von Staden |
Justification | A very rare species, known from two locations, and potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive plants and overgrazing at one of these. It therefore qualifies as Vulnerable under criterion D. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Limpopo, Mpumalanga |
Range | This species occurs in the Limpopo Drakensberg Escarpment, from the Downs southwards to the northern end of the Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga. |

The subpopulation at Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve is potentially threatened by competition from alien invasive plants, as well as habitat degradation due to livestock grazing grasslands inside the reserve. The subpopulation at Blyde River Canyon is not threatened. |
Population |
This species is known from only two subpopulations, and is extremely rare in the wild (Otieno 2004).
