Justification
A range-restricted, localized Knersvlakte endemic, with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 151 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 28 km². It is known to occur at five locations and is threatened by habitat loss due to prospecting, mining and collecting for the specialist horticultural trade. The small global population, estimated to number fewer than 1000 mature individuals, continues to decline. It therefore meets the thresholds for Endangered under criterion B.
Distribution
Endemism
South African endemic
Provincial distribution
Western Cape
Range
This species is endemic to the Knersvlakte region of the Western Cape Province, South Africa.
Habitat and Ecology
Major system
Terrestrial
Major habitats
Knersvlakte Dolomite Vygieveld
Description
Plants occur on crevices and cracks in dolomite outcrops and limestone ridges.
Threats
There are currently prospecting applications on all properties where this narrow endemic is known to occur. About 5% of this species' habitat has already been destroyed by prospecting and mining, and the current applications are highly likely to result in further habitat loss to mining. This species is also threatened by collecting for the specialist horticultural trade.
Population

The species is known from a few, localized subpopulations, of about a hundred or less plants each (Snijman 2012). One subpopulation has around 500 mature individuals (N.A. Helme pers. comm.).

Population trend
Decreasing
Conservation
Not conserved in any formally protected area.
