Scientific Name | Arrowsmithia revoluta (Oliv.) N.G.Bergh |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
Synonyms | Macowania revoluta Oliv. |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Vulnerable B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) |
Assessment Date | 2021/02/24 |
Assessor(s) | V.R. Clark & H. Mtshali |
Justification | This range-restricted endemic from the Amathole Mountains has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 516 km², and is known from between six and nine locations. The quality of habitat continues to decline due to severe pressure from alien invasive species. It is therefore assessed as Vulnerable under criterion B. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Eastern Cape |
Range | This Amathole Mountain endemic has a limited distribution range, and occurs from Katberg to Stutterheim. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Amathole Montane Grassland |
Description | This species occurs in wet places along forest margins and in adjacent grassland. |
Threats |
This species is found in habitats which are under severe pressure from alien invasive plant species. Alien plants have been recorded at a number of subpopulations, furthermore the subpopulations occuring close to the town of Hogsback are threatened by too frequest fires and ongoing degradation of the habitat as a result of recreational activities. This species has lost habitat in the past to wood plantations. The potential impacts of climate change need to be investigated. |
Population |
This species was previously known from old collections made in the 1900s. It was rediscovered in 2010 near Keiskammahoek and by collections in Hogsback, Amathole Mountains and Isidenge State Forest between 2010 and 2015. The population trend is unknown, but is inferred to be declining due to ongoing habitat degradation.
