Scientific Name | Gazania lanata Magee & Boatwr. |
Higher Classification | Dicotyledons |
Family | ASTERACEAE |
National Status |
Status and Criteria | Data Deficient - Insufficient Information |
Assessment Date | 2011/10/19 |
Assessor(s) | A.R. Magee & L. von Staden |
Justification | Gazania lanata is only known from one collection, and its distribution range is not yet clearly defined. Plants at the only known location are threatened by habitat loss to quarrying, and it is not known whether other subpopulations exist or not. It is however likely to be a localized endemic, and more field surveys are required to determine its status. |
Distribution |
Endemism | South African endemic |
Provincial distribution | Western Cape |
Range | Robertson. |
Habitat and Ecology |
Major system | Terrestrial |
Major habitats | Breede Shale Fynbos |
Description | Shallow soils on dolomite outcrops. |
Threats |
Plants at the only known location are threatened by habitat loss to an expanding quarry. |
Population |
Gazania lanata is only known from one collection. The population size is not known, but is suspected to be declining. It appears to be an edaphic specialist, but it is not known whether this is the only subpopulation, or if others exist, as no efforts have yet been made to survey other suitable habitat in the area. It is unlikely to be the only subpopulation as all other known Gazania species are widespread (A. Magee, pers. comm.), but this species is suspected to be localized in its distribution.
